Sign Up: "Value Has Already Been Taken" Message
The red "Value has already been taken" message appears when the email address you entered to create a new OpenStax account is already associated with an existing account on openstax.org.
Why this happens
This message appears when:
- The email address is already linked to an existing OpenStax account, or
- An account was created with this email address, but the email has not yet been verified
Each OpenStax account must use a unique email address, even if the account setup is not yet complete.
What to do next
Option 1: Log in to your existing account
- On the sign-up page, select the Log in tab on the left instead of creating a new account.
- Enter your email address and password.
- Select Continue.
If your email has already been verified, you'll be logged in successfully.
Option 2: Complete email verification
If you recently signed up and haven't verified your email yet:
- Check your inbox (and spam or junk folder) for an email from OpenStax.
- Open the email and select the Verify email link.
- Return to openstax.org and log in.
If you don't see the verification email, try logging in again and resending the confirmation email:
- Click on unconfirmed.
- Click Resend confirmation email.
Option 3: Reset your password
If you don't remember your password:
- Go to the Log In page.
- Select Forgot password?
- Enter the email address you used to sign up.
- Follow the instructions in the email to reset your password.
