Sign Up: "Value Has Already Been Taken" Message

The red "Value has already been taken" message appears when the email address you entered to create a new OpenStax account is already associated with an existing account on openstax.org.

Sign-up form showing the red Value has already been taken error message below the email field.

Why this happens

This message appears when:

  • The email address is already linked to an existing OpenStax account, or
  • An account was created with this email address, but the email has not yet been verified

Each OpenStax account must use a unique email address, even if the account setup is not yet complete.

What to do next

Option 1: Log in to your existing account

  1. On the sign-up page, select the Log in tab on the left instead of creating a new account.

Login page with the Log in tab highlighted on the left.

  2. Enter your email address and password.
  3. Select Continue.

If your email has already been verified, you'll be logged in successfully.
