How do I copy a course or assignment?

Course copy, export, and import are standard LMS functions that work with Assignable in the same way they do elsewhere in your LMS. You may need assistance from your IT administrator and should follow your LMS’s specific instructions.

While Assignable tries to make copying assignments and courses within the LMS as seamless as possible, there are some situations that may result in unexpected behavior:

  • Copying an assignment within a course is supported. Changes to the Assignable assignment configuration in the copy will not affect the original. In Canvas, do not import the same assignment more than once, as changes may be overwritten.
  • Copying a course is supported. Changes in the copied course will not affect assignments in the original course.
  • Changes made to the original assignment will continue to affect the copy until the copy is opened. After it is opened, it will no longer receive changes from the original.
  • Copying a course that was already copied from another course is not supported and may not retain edits.
  • Copying an assignment that was already copied from another assignment is not supported and may not retain edits.

How are grades handled in copied courses and assignments?

When a course is copied, assignments are included, but grade handling varies by LMS:

  • Blackboard and Canvas: Grades are not copied. Only assignment structures transfer.
  • D2L and Moodle: Grades can be copied.
    • In Moodle, students can resubmit assignments, and new submissions override copied grades.

Grades in the copied course are independent of the original course.
