How do I create an OpenStax Assignable assignment in Brightspace by D2L?

To help you get started with creating an assignment in Brightspace by D2L, we've prepared a short video guide and a step-by-step walkthrough. Once you have created your first assignment, you will not need to log in to your OpenStax account again, and you can follow the same process to create any future assignments.

Navigate to Course Content

  1. Log in to your Brightspace by D2L account and select your course.

  2. On your course page, select Content.

  3. You may need to create a module in order to access the tool from the Existing Activities dropdown.

  4. Click the Existing Activities dropdown menu and select OpenStax.

Link Your OpenStax Account

  1. You'll be prompted to log in to your OpenStax account. Your OpenStax account will need to be instructor verified. Click Link your OpenStax account.

  2. Click Log in or Sign up, and follow the steps to either log into your account or create a new OpenStax account. If you have any difficulty verifying your account as an instructor, reach out to our Customer Support team.

Create Your Assignment

  1. Once you are logged in, return to Brightspace by D2L and select the OpenStax textbook you are using for your course.

  2. Optional: After selecting your textbook, we encourage you to add My Textbook and My Highlights as resources to your course page. Click Select on both screens to do so. This will create a dedicated link on your course dashboard to the selected resources. After adding these items, return to step 4 and proceed from there to create your assignment. Since you have already linked your account, you will not need to repeat steps 5–6.

  3. Select the chapters, sections, or activities you would like to include in your assignment, then click Create.

  4. You should see the assignment you created as an attachment on the new assignment page. You can preview the assignment by clicking Preview assignment, which will open a new tab. Adjust any other settings, then click Save and Close.
