Using OpenStax Content with AI Tools

OpenStax content is openly licensed, which allows many forms of reuse and adaptation, including use in educational workflows that involve AI tools, provided that your use complies with the license that applies to the specific OpenStax book.

What you can do

With a CC BY-NC-SA licensed book, you can use OpenStax content with AI tools for noncommercial purposes, such as teaching, learning, studying, or other educational activities. You must also provide appropriate attribution and share any resulting adaptations under the same CC BY-NC-SA license.

As long as you follow these requirements, you can use AI tools to:

  • Summarize or simplify content for learners.
  • Adapt or remix content for a course or learning activity.
  • Create study materials, such as explanations, examples, practice questions, or study guides based on the content.
  • Adjust the reading level or format to make the material more accessible.
  • Translate content into another language.

Noncommercial use means you are not selling the OpenStax content or an adaptation of it, or otherwise using the content for a commercial purpose.

What about generative AI?

Using an AI tool to summarize, assist with adapting, or translate OpenStax content is not necessarily the same as training an AI model.

OpenStax books specifically state that the content may not be used to train large language models or otherwise be ingested into large language models or generative AI offerings without OpenStax's permission.

Before uploading substantial amounts of OpenStax content to an AI service, verify the licensing and AI use notice for the specific book, and review how the AI provider uses submitted content, ensuring it will not be used for training.

For model training, the incorporation of OpenStax content into a generative AI product or other large-scale ingestion, contact OpenStax for permission or additional guidance.

For commercial use, submit the OpenStax Content Reuse Request Form.
