Browser-Based Text-to-Speech Tools

We recommend using the online (web view) version of OpenStax books for the best accessible experience. This version includes alt text for all images and figures, allowing screen readers to interpret visual content. The page structure, including headers, exercises, and features, is designed for screen-reader compatibility.

Most browsers offer built-in text-to-speech features. In addition, all major platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Fire OS, and Chrome OS, provide system-wide screen reader tools.

You can also install browser extensions that offer text-to-speech functionality, such as:

If you have suggestions for free browser tools that have worked well for you, please contact us at support@openstax.org.

Mobile Device Accessibility Options

Most mobile devices come with built-in screen readers or voiceover features that support audio access to digital content.

These tools allow users to navigate and read digital content aloud, including OpenStax books accessed in mobile browsers or compatible apps.

Bookshare Library Access

Some OpenStax titles are available through Bookshare, a free service for individuals with verified print disabilities. Bookshare provides accessible formats such as DAISY, audio, and braille-compatible versions.

We are working to expand the number of OpenStax titles available through Bookshare. Current titles include:

  • Biology 2e
  • Chemistry: Atoms First 2e
  • Concepts of Biology
  • Introduction to Sociology 3e
  • U.S. History

Please note that while OpenStax provides the core content, Bookshare manages access, downloads, and support for their resources. For more information, visit the Bookshare Help Center.

Audiobooks Created by Partner Institutions

  • Canvas-compatible resources

You can access these materials at Open Audio. For questions about these resources, please use the Open Audio contact form.
