Citing OpenStax texts

This article explains where to find pre-formatted attributions and citation information for your OpenStax book.

Locate Your Book’s Citation/Attribution Menu

At the bottom of every page in the online version of your book, there is a Citation/Attribution dropdown menu. This menu includes:

  • Pre-formatted attributions
  • Citation information
  • A link to a citation generator for style-specific citations (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.)

Follow these steps to locate it:

  1. Go to openstax.org.
  2. Hover over the Subjects tab and select your subject (openstax.org/subjects).
    • For example, to find Anatomy and Physiology 2e, select Science.
  3. Select the book you want to cite.
  4. Click View Online under the Get the book dropdown menu.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Citation/Attribution to expand the menu.

Note About Page Numbers

The online version of OpenStax books does not include page numbers. Page numbers are available in the PDF and print versions. All OpenStax textbooks are available as free PDF downloads.

Redistribution and Adaptation

If you are redistributing, remixing, or adapting OpenStax content, include the pre-formatted attribution at the bottom of each print or digital page that uses OpenStax material. This is the only required attribution.

Additional citation formats are provided for those who need them for syllabi or publications.
