How do I create an OpenStax Assignable assignment in Moodle version 3.10 or later?
Creating an OpenStax Assignable Assignment in Moodle
To help you get started with creating an assignment in Moodle, we’ve prepared a short video guide and a step-by-step walkthrough. These instructions will walk you through setting up your first assignment in Assignable. Once you have created your first assignment, you will not need to log in to your OpenStax account again, and you can follow the same process to create any future assignments.
Video Walkthrough
This article includes a short step-by-step video that walks you through the process from start to finish. We recommend watching the video first for a visual demonstration, then using the written instructions below as a reference while you complete the steps in your course.
Please note that if the screenshots differ from what you see, you may be using a customized version of Moodle.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Log in to your Moodle account and select your course from “Available courses.”
- Once you're within your course page, click “Turn editing on.”
- Click “Add an activity or resource.”
- Select “OpenStax” from the activity chooser.
Note: This appears only if the LMS administrator has configured “Show in activity chooser and as a pre-configured tool.” See step 5 for an alternative. - Alternative to step 4: If OpenStax does not appear, select “External tool.”
- Complete the “Activity name” field as desired, then click “Select content.”
- Log in to your OpenStax Educator account or create one. Your account must be instructor-verified. For step-by-step instructions, please visit the Requesting Instructor Only access on OpenStax.org help article.
- Click “Log in” or “Sign up,” and follow the prompts.
- Return to Moodle and select the OpenStax textbook for your course.
- Please note that students are now required to pay for Assignable. The ability to change books in a course will not be available without contacting Customer Support.
- Optional: Add “My Textbook” and “My Highlights” as resources to your course page. After doing so, return to step 3 to continue creating your assignment.
- Select the chapter(s) and activities to include in your assignment, then click “Review Assignment.”
- Review assignment settings such as attempts and point values, then click “Create.”
- Configure any additional Moodle assignment settings (grading, access, etc.) as needed.
- Choose “Save and return to course” or “Save and display.” You can view the assignment from the student perspective by clicking into “Activities.”
