Importing QTI Test Bank into Canvas

How do I import a QTI Test Bank into Canvas?

This help article is for OpenStax textbooks with a Canvas QTI 2.1 Test Bank (the only available format) on the Instructor Resources page. OpenStax resources are developed with text-specific grant funding at the time of publication, so offerings vary from book to book. The only titles with a QTI Test Bank for uploading into Canvas are:

Note: For titles without a QTI Test Bank, if a test bank is provided for your textbook (resources vary for each title), you can find it on the Instructor Resources page of the book in .docx format. You will need to convert it for use with your Learning Management System.

 

  1. After logging into your verified OpenStax Educator account, access the QTI Test Bank in Google Drive from the book's Instructor Resources page. Download individual chapter QTI files to your device. Please note that QTI files are import packages, not readable documents. They must be downloaded and imported into your LMS.

  2. Log into your Canvas account.
  3. Under Settings, select Import Course Content on the right.

  4. Under Content Type, select QTI .zip file.

  5. Under Source, click the Choose File button.

  6. Access the QTI file for the chapter you wish to import and select Open.

    Note: Chapter question banks will need to be uploaded one at a time. Repeat this process for each chapter QTI file.

  7. Under Default Question Bank, select Create new question bank.

  8. Fill in the Question bank name field to proceed.

    Note: This title will not be transferred once the file uploads to the Course Question Banks. You should be able to identify which file was uploaded using the time stamp.

  9. Click Import.

  10. Once loaded, the status should change from Running to Completed.

  11. Select Quizzes on the left.

  12. Next to the +Quiz button, click the three-dot menu on the right and select Manage Question Banks.

  13. Each chapter file will be uploaded with the title "No Name - Test Course." Look for the time stamp to locate the file you just uploaded.
  14. All chapter questions will appear once you open the question bank. Question labels should match the chapter title.
  15. Repeat steps 3 through 14 to upload the rest of the chapters into Canvas Question Banks.
