How do I create an OpenStax Assignable assignment in Schoology?

To help you get started with creating an assignment in Schoology, we've prepared a short video guide and a step-by-step walkthrough. Once you have created your first assignment, you will not need to log in to your OpenStax account again, and you can follow the same process to create any future assignments.

Navigate to Your Course

  1. Log in to your Schoology account and select your course from the Courses dropdown.

    You can also select your course from the Course Dashboard.

  2. On the course page, select Add Materials. You should see OpenStax Assignable in the dropdown menu on the right.

    If it's not showing up, the application hasn't been configured properly. Ask your administrator to double-check that all integration steps have been completed. For guidance, refer to How do I integrate OpenStax Assignable with Schoology?

Link Your OpenStax Account

  1. Select OpenStax Assignable. The Assignable window will pop up to link your OpenStax account.

  2. Select Link your OpenStax Account, which will bring you to the OpenStax login page. Follow the steps to either log into your account or create a new one. For detailed instructions on signing up for an Educator account, refer to Requesting Instructor-Only Access to the Resources on OpenStax.org.

Create Your Assignment

  1. Once your account has been linked, navigate back to Schoology and select the book you are assigning. If your book isn't listed immediately, you can find it under Show All Books. Please note that only reading assignments will be available for your book.

  2. Optional: After selecting your textbook, we encourage you to add My Textbook and My Highlights as resources to your course page. This will create a dedicated link on your course dashboard to the selected resources. After adding these items, return to step 5 and proceed from there. Since you have already linked your account, you will not need to repeat steps 3–4.

  3. Select the textbook chapter from the left panel to pick the content you want to assign, then choose the sections or activities to include. You can assign content from multiple chapters, and an icon will appear next to any chapter that has selected activities. When you're finished, click Review Assessment.

  4. Use the settings provided to configure your assignment. At the top, you'll see the total number of points. You can also adjust settings for additional attempts and whether students receive feedback after each attempt. At the bottom, configure the point value for each section. When you're finished, click Create.

  5. A new assignment will now appear in your Schoology course. Click on the assignment to reconfigure it. To rename the assignment or modify how it appears in your gradebook, click the gear icon next to it.
